The history of the city dates back thousands of years to when Kumeyaay and other indigenous peoples lived in what is now known as the San Diego area. The earliest European visit to the region was by Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542, who landed on the shores of San Diego Bay and claimed the area for Spain. Several centuries later, the Presidio and Mission San Diego de Alcala were founded to establish the first settlements in what would become Alta California.

Today, the city is a global center for business, science and technology. It is also an excellent choice for those looking for an active lifestyle and outdoor recreation. Its 70 miles of beaches are perfect for swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, boating, or surfing. Balboa Park is a renowned 1,200-acre park in the heart of the city. It’s the home of the world-renowned San Diego Zoo, and hosts 17 other museums as well. Its botanical garden features a lily pond and the Spreckels Organ Pavilion, where on Sunday afternoons you can hear the 5,017 pipes play out.
